United States, 18 September 2026 – OpenAI is introducing Astra for Law, a legal-work configuration of GPT-6 Astra that combines a dedicated search index with instructions for legal analysis and writing, as AI competition moves towards specialised professional workflows rather than general-purpose chat alone.
The company’s documentation says the Legal Search Index covers US case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions, with new sources added daily. The model is designed to help examine legal questions against client facts, develop arguments and deal terms, and consider objections. OpenAI expressly tells users to review answers and cited sources before relying on them, a qualification that remains essential to professional deployment.
