San Francisco, United States, 18 August 2026 – OpenAI is set to lease a large new artificial-intelligence data centre in the United States with backing from Nvidia, highlighting the scale of infrastructure required to train and operate increasingly capable models. The arrangement links a model developer, a leading chip supplier and a data-centre platform in a capital-intensive expansion of the AI economy.
Leasing rather than owning the facility can give OpenAI faster access to computing capacity while limiting the need to fund every building and power system on its own balance sheet. For the infrastructure provider, a long-term tenant with strong demand can support financing, equipment purchases and construction planning. The structure resembles a specialised industrial partnership more than a conventional office lease.
