Nothing Raises US$200 Million to Build AI-Native Operating System and Next-Generation Devices

By Steven Tech3 min read

LONDON, 29 September 2025 — Consumer tech startup Nothing has secured US$200 million in fresh funding to fuel its ambitious plan to build an AI-native operating system and expand into a broader range of AI-powered devices. The raise values the company at around US$1.3 billion and underscores investor confidence in its push to move beyond smartphones into integrated software-hardware ecosystems.

Founded by Carl Pei, Nothing has built a reputation for minimalist, transparent product designs and a loyal following of tech-savvy, design-conscious consumers. To date, the company has sold over seven million devices worldwide and generated approximately US$500 million in revenue last year, representing a 150% year-on-year increase. With this funding round, led by Tiger Global alongside Qualcomm Ventures, GV, and Highland Europe, Nothing is signaling a strategic pivot to redefine its identity, not just as a hardware brand but as a builder of a comprehensive AI-first digital environment.

Pei has outlined that the new operating system will be “hyper-personalised,” designed to dynamically adapt to user behaviour, anticipate needs, and execute tasks autonomously rather than relying on static interfaces. This marks a departure from conventional mobile OS platforms, with Nothing aiming to create an intelligent layer that spans multiple devices. While its current Nothing OS remains Android-based, the company expects to transition into its proprietary AI-native platform by 2026.

The scope of the company’s ambition extends beyond smartphones. Nothing has hinted at integrating its AI OS into smart glasses, robotics, and even automotive systems, creating a seamless experience across varied form factors. By building this AI-centric ecosystem, the company hopes to differentiate itself in a market dominated by Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi. For Pei, the objective is clear: to offer users a holistic technology experience that goes beyond specifications and enters the realm of intelligence-driven lifestyle solutions.

The strategic rationale is multifaceted. With smartphone hardware margins thinning, Nothing sees an opportunity to capture value by creating its own operating system and services layer, generating recurring revenue streams. For investors, the US$1.3 billion valuation reflects patience for this long-term vision, giving the company the capital runway it needs to invest heavily in R&D and developer ecosystems before monetisation becomes urgent.

Still, the road ahead will not be without challenges. Transitioning from hardware to platform is notoriously difficult. Nothing will need to convince developers, partners, and consumers to adopt its AI OS while addressing critical issues around data privacy, user trust, and system performance. Execution risks are also significant, as integrating software intelligence across devices from smartphones to smart glasses requires technological precision and extensive testing.

Nonetheless, this fundraising marks a defining moment in Nothing’s evolution. From its early beginnings as a disruptive smartphone brand, the company is now positioning itself at the forefront of AI-native ecosystems. Whether it can carve out meaningful market share against established giants will hinge on its ability to deliver a compelling, secure, and seamless AI-powered experience.
