New Zealand Steel Starts Lower-Carbon Production with Electric Arc Furnace

Glenbrook, 10 August 2026 – New Zealand Steel has begun commercial production using a new electric arc furnace at its Glenbrook steelworks, marking a major industrial transition expected to reduce the site’s annual greenhouse-gas emissions by more than 45%.

The first commercial heat was produced just over two years after construction began in June 2024. The project replaced the oxygen steelmaking furnace and two of Glenbrook’s four coal-fuelled kilns, a change expected to halve coal use at the site.
