Hong Kong, 14 October 2026 – New World Development’s agreement with Airport Authority Hong Kong has eased a pressing financial burden, but the transaction also underlines how much work remains to repair the developer’s balance sheet. The authority will take full control of the HK$18 billion 11 SKIES retail-and-office complex near Hong Kong International Airport, while New World is released from billions of dollars in future rent obligations.

Under the arrangement, New World will hand over the project and provide more than HK$3 billion in cash and services. The authority also receives an option to acquire 750 million New World shares, equivalent to roughly 30% of the company, from the Cheng family’s investment vehicle, Chow Tai Fook Enterprises. The option price is HK$2.25 billion, representing a substantial discount to the developer’s recent market price, and can be exercised within three years.
