Putrajaya, 19 September 2026 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said the conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will not weaken the government’s commitment to combating corruption and abuse of power. The assurance comes as investors, businesses and civil-society groups assess how Malaysia will reconcile a constitutionally valid clemency decision with the administration’s stated governance and institutional-reform agenda.
Najib was granted permission to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until 23 August 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine. The decision followed consideration by the Federal Territories Pardons Board and the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Anwar said ongoing corruption cases must continue according to law, drawing a distinction between the constitutional pardon process and the government’s responsibility to enforce anti-corruption measures.
