New York, United States, 6 August 2026 – Managing high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes while avoiding smoking in middle age was associated with almost 13 additional years of life without dementia, strengthening the case for prevention as both a health and economic priority.
The study analysed 12,409 people who were free of dementia at an average age of 56 and followed them for about three decades, with an average follow-up of 26 years. During that period, 3,008 participants developed dementia and 5,238 died without developing the condition.
