Maybank’s RM4.83 billion move to take full control of Etiqa is more than a corporate acquisition. It shows how Malaysia’s biggest lender wants to own a bigger part of the customer’s financial life.

Maybank has always been one of Malaysia’s most familiar banking names. For many Malaysians, it is the bank account, the debit card, the salary credit, the mortgage, the car loan, the credit card, the QR payment and the app used almost every day.

Now, Maybank wants a bigger piece of something more personal: protection.

The bank is buying Ageas’ remaining 30.95% stake in Maybank Ageas Holdings, the owner of Etiqa’s insurance and takaful businesses in Malaysia and Singapore, for about RM4.83 billion. Once completed, the deal will give Maybank full ownership of Etiqa, turning one of Malaysia’s largest financial institutions into an even more integrated banking and insurance group.
