Kuching, 16 September 2026 – Malaysia is prioritising diplomatic cooperation and preventive action in its response to transboundary haze, placing operational coordination ahead of seeking compensation from neighbouring countries. The approach outlined by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reflects the difficulty of addressing a regional environmental problem through domestic measures alone.
Speaking after a high-level committee meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid said he would raise the issue with Indonesian Vice-President Gibran Rakabuming Raka during a planned Jakarta visit from 17 to 20 September. Malaysia’s disaster-management agency is prepared to assist with cloud seeding and logistics for fires in Kalimantan if an official request is received. That readiness should not be confused with an assistance operation already being deployed.
