Kuala Lumpur, 5 August 2026 – Malaysia is seeking stronger safeguards for agricultural land as rapid investment in artificial intelligence, data centres and semiconductor manufacturing intensifies competition for land, electricity and water.

Federal authorities are looking to work more closely with state governments to prevent strategically important farmland from being converted indiscriminately for industrial and commercial projects. The issue is particularly sensitive because land administration falls largely under state jurisdiction, requiring coordination rather than a single federal directive.
