Manjung, Malaysia, 29 September 2026 – Malaysia has begun the first phase of a plan to return 5,000 Myanmar nationals in stages, with 1,476 people identified for the initial operation. Authorities describe the programme as voluntary, while international organisations and rights advocates have warned that conditions in Myanmar require careful individual safeguards. The immediate story is an administrative and diplomatic operation; the larger question is whether each person’s identity, status and consent have been established reliably before departure.
Malaysia’s Home Ministry previously said the first group was selected following a bilateral process and would be returned on 29 September. Official figures put 10,388 Myanmar nationals in Malaysian immigration detention depots as of 15 August. Those numbers should not be conflated: the 1,476-person first phase is a subset of a proposed 5,000-person programme, and the detention figure is a broader stock at an earlier date. Neither number establishes how many people have already arrived safely or completed the process.
