Seoul, 30 July 2026 – South Korea has fined telecommunications group KT Corp about US$37.4 million over a personal-data leak, adding financial and reputational pressure to an industry that manages some of the country’s most sensitive digital infrastructure.
The sanction is significant because telecom operators sit at the centre of identity verification, mobile payments, cloud services and enterprise connectivity. A weakness in customer-data controls can spread beyond one company, exposing households to fraud while forcing banks, platforms and government agencies to strengthen their own monitoring.
