KUALA LUMPUR, 21 October 2025 — Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) and Open Re Sdn Bhd (OpenRE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing artificial intelligence (AI)-integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions.
The partnership supports Malaysia’s accelerating renewable energy (RE) transition and the growing need for intelligent energy management.
The collaboration focuses on delivering BESS solutions optimised for Maximum Demand (MD) scenarios, periods when electricity usage peaks and energy costs are highest. By combining AI with intelligent demand-response capabilities, the joint solutions will enable businesses and industries to reduce operational costs, enhance energy efficiency, and contribute to Malaysia’s decarbonisation goals.
“This collaboration with Huawei marks a major step forward in intelligent energy management,” said Dr Lin Horng Sheng, Chief Executive Officer of OpenRE. “By integrating Huawei’s world-class BESS hardware with OpenRE’s proprietary AI Energy Demand Response (AIE-DR), we are empowering industries to manage energy more intelligently and move closer to carbon-neutral operations.”
Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia’s Digital Power Business, added: “Malaysia’s energy transition depends on the seamless integration of digital technologies with clean power systems. Together with OpenRE, we aim to strengthen the country’s energy storage ecosystem and deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions.”
Huawei Malaysia will serve as the technology enabler, contributing its global expertise, advanced Smart PV and BESS technologies, as well as manufacturing and technical support. OpenRE complements this by providing its AI-powered Energy Management System (EMS) software and end-user solutions.
Under the MoU, both parties will work together to build a sustainable energy ecosystem, capture emerging market opportunities, and deliver end-to-end intelligent energy management solutions across key industrial sectors.
Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) identifies energy storage as a key pillar in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The Huawei-OpenRE partnership aligns with this national agenda by enhancing grid flexibility, reliability, and renewable energy integration through advanced, AI-driven storage systems.
The MoU was formalised during the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2025, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last week.
The signing ceremony was officiated by Dr Teoh Boon Yew, General Manager (Business Development) of OpenRE, and Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia’s Digital Power Business, witnessed by officials from the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) and Huawei Malaysia.
