San Francisco, 6 August 2026 – Alphabet has reorganised the leadership of its artificial intelligence operations, moving Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis into a strategic scientific role as several influential engineers leave the company and delays surrounding its next Gemini model test investor confidence.
Hassabis will step away from day-to-day management of Google DeepMind to become Alphabet’s chief scientist and chairman of the AI unit. The Nobel Prize recipient is expected to concentrate on artificial general intelligence, long-term research strategy and the societal implications of increasingly capable AI systems.
