Last updated on August 2, 2025

PUTRAJAYA – Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has highlighted the potential of the orange economy—which encompasses creative sectors such as film, music, and animation—to drive Malaysia’s economic growth.

Fahmi, who also serves as the Madani government’s spokesperson, said the inclusion of the orange economy in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) reflects growing recognition of its importance. This followed a series of engagement sessions between the Communications Ministry and the Economy Ministry.

“The Economy Ministry welcomed our proposal and incorporated it into the final 13MP document,” he said during a press conference after the Cabinet meeting. “This engagement was a crucial intervention that showed the orange economy’s potential to contribute meaningfully to national development.”

He also acknowledged the Economy Ministry’s inclusive approach during the 13MP drafting process, which involved every ministry through detailed consultations.

Fahmi further expressed appreciation for the support from Finas (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia) and MyCreative Ventures, noting their role in ensuring that the film, music, and animation industries benefit fully from the initiatives outlined in the plan.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in tabling the 13MP in Parliament yesterday, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing the orange economy through the digital creative industry.

Anwar announced the introduction of a Matching Fund and Co-Production Fund to promote public-private co-investments in producing world-class content.

He noted that Malaysia’s digital creative industry has already contributed RM6.3 billion in revenue, with RM850 million in export value. – BERNAMA
