New York, 6 October 2026 – A new survey of public opinion in mainland China suggests that diplomacy remains the preferred route for managing the Taiwan question, but the result comes with a sharp deterrence caveat that investors cannot ignore: support for military action rises when respondents are asked about a formal declaration of independence.
The China Pulse survey, conducted by the Carter Center and Emory University between 16 April and 26 June 2026, found that roughly two-thirds of respondents supported official negotiations aimed at a peaceful settlement. That was higher than the 52% recorded in late 2025. The shift indicates that a substantial share of the mainland public sees dialogue and managed relations as preferable to immediate confrontation, even while accepting the government’s objective of eventual unification.
