Beijing, 26 August 2026 – The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and international monetary authorities have achieved significant operational milestones in the global expansion of the digital fiat currency (e-CNY), scaling multi-billion-dollar corporate trade transactions across the multilateral Central Bank Digital Currency (mBridge) platform alongside partner central banks in Hong Kong, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
The mBridge initiative, developed in collaboration with the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Innovation Hub, represents the most advanced cross-border central bank digital currency network in live commercial operation. By utilizing distributed ledger technology (DLT) and customized cryptographic consensus protocols, the platform enables commercial banks and corporate enterprises to execute instant, atomic peer-to-peer foreign exchange and trade settlements in local digital currencies without routing transactions through traditional Western correspondent banking intermediaries or legacy payment messaging networks.
