Cape EMS and Sermatec Forge Strategic Partnership to Localise Battery Storage Solutions in ASEAN

Johor Bahru, September 2, 2025 — Cape EMS Bhd, one of Malaysia’s leading electronic manufacturing services (EMS) providers, has signed a landmark Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Shanghai Sermatec Energy Technology Co Ltd, a BloombergNEF-certified Tier 1 global energy storage manufacturer, to localise battery energy storage systems (BESS) production and lifecycle services for the ASEAN market.

Under the agreement, Sermatec will transfer the full assembly of its BESS units to Cape EMS’s manufacturing facility in Senai, Johor. These systems will be locally produced, tested, insured, and deployed with long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) contracts, ensuring robust lifecycle support for both institutional and commercial clients across the region.

Cape EMS, through its renewable energy subsidiary CAPE Renewables Sdn Bhd, will also take charge of localised monitoring and management of the Battery Management System (BMS) and Energy Management System (EMS), enabling seamless operations, faster technical response, and optimised efficiency for regional projects.

Building a Regional Energy Storage Hub

This collaboration positions Cape EMS as Sermatec’s strategic regional partner for manufacturing, supply, and post-deployment maintenance of BESS technology. By anchoring production in Malaysia, the partnership is set to strengthen supply chain resilience while offering ASEAN clients more responsive, reliable, and cost-effective energy storage solutions.

“This partnership with Sermatec marks a new chapter for Malaysia’s energy storage industry,” Cape EMS said in a statement. “Beyond bringing world-class BESS technology closer to home, we are building the regional capability to maintain and scale clean energy infrastructure that supports ASEAN’s growing renewable energy ambitions.”

A Sermatec representative added, “Malaysia is a strategic base for our regional expansion, and Cape EMS’s proven track record in engineering and renewable solutions makes them the ideal partner. Through this collaboration, we can deliver high-quality, locally supported energy storage systems tailored for ASEAN’s dynamic markets.”

Supporting Clean Energy Growth in ASEAN

The timing of the agreement aligns with Southeast Asia’s rapid shift toward renewable energy adoption and electrification. Demand for robust energy storage infrastructure is surging, driven by large-scale solar (LSS) deployments and the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging networks.

By combining Sermatec’s global expertise in battery storage technology with Cape EMS’s localised engineering and lifecycle management, the partnership aims to play a pivotal role in building a sustainable, decarbonised future for the region.

Cape EMS and Sermatec will now work jointly to scale production capacity and service frameworks, ensuring that BESS installations across ASEAN are supported by long-term O&M programs, reinforcing customer confidence and advancing the region’s clean energy transition.
