Beijing, 8 September 2026 – ByteDance is intensifying work on a new artificial-intelligence system designed to generate and navigate three-dimensional virtual environments in real time, placing founder Zhang Yiming at the centre of a strategic push into so-called world models. The company is directing substantial computing resources towards the project and could unveil the system as early as October, according to people familiar with the development.
World models aim to help artificial intelligence understand how environments behave rather than merely predict the next word, image or video frame. A capable system can represent objects, motion, space and cause-and-effect, then respond as a user or machine interacts with a simulated scene. That makes the technology relevant to robotics, autonomous systems, game creation, extended-reality content and training environments where physical experimentation is expensive or unsafe.
