UNITED KINGDOM, 06 OCTOBER 2025 – The famous British actress Dame Patricia Routledge has died. She was 96 years old. She was best known for playing Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet”) in the popular BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.
Hyacinth was the very snobbish lady who always tried hard to look wealthy and important.
Her agent shared the sad news. They said Dame Patricia died quietly in her sleep this morning. Even at 96, she still loved her work and wanted to connect with her audience.
Her classic TV roles are still being watched by new, younger fans today. She will be missed by her family and all her devoted fans around the world.
The hit show Keeping Up Appearances ran on television from 1990 to 1995. Her co-star was Clive Swift, who played her patient husband, Richard.
The show was very popular all over the world. The BBC’s director of comedy, Jon Petrie, paid tribute. He called her portrayal of Hyacinth one of the most famous performances in British comedy.
Petrie said she gave the character “truth, precision, and warmth.” He added that she made millions of people laugh and leaves behind a wonderful legacy.
Actress Kerry Howard, who played a young Hyacinth in a different show, also sent her respects. She called Dame Patricia a “monolithic talent“ and a “comic beacon.”
She said the star was like her “first drama teacher,” even though they never met. Howard believes a “wonderful clown” has now left this world.
Dame Patricia had a very long career in acting. She won a Tony Award for her work on the stage in New York.
She also won an Olivier Award in London for a different stage show. Later, she starred as the detective in the TV mystery series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.
In 2017, she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire for her work in theatre and for charity. She also appeared in Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads TV shows and the 1967 film To Sir, With Love.
