Fukui, 10 September 2026 – The Bank of Japan may need to raise interest rates more rapidly if inflation accelerates from already broadening levels, board member Kazuyuki Masu has warned ahead of the central bank’s September policy meeting. His remarks reinforce expectations of another increase from the current 1 per cent policy rate and place renewed focus on the yen, producer prices and the risk that loose financial conditions amplify cost pressures.
Masu said underlying inflation was very close to the BOJ’s 2 per cent target and argued that real interest rates should be moved out of negative territory as soon as possible. He did not specify the timing or pace of future action, but said the policy rate should rise further within the estimated neutral range. BOJ staff calculations place Japan’s nominal neutral rate between 1.1 per cent and 2.5 per cent, leaving substantial uncertainty around the endpoint.
