At Least 15 Killed, Nearly 20 Injured as Iconic Lisbon Cable-Car Derails

Lisbon, September 3, 2025 — A tragic derailment occurred this evening on Lisbon’s historic Gloria funicular railway, one of the city’s most iconic and beloved transport systems. The accident has claimed the lives of at least 15 people, with 18 others injured, marking one of the worst public transportation disasters in recent memory.

The funicular, which travels between Restauradores Square and Bairro Alto, was used by both tourists and locals. Sources report that five of the injured are in critical condition. Among the victims were foreign nationals, although authorities have yet to release personal identifying details.

Authorities swiftly initiated rescue operations, extracting victims from the wreckage amid harrowing footage showing the yellow, tram-like car on its side. Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas described the incident as a devastating blow to the city. “It’s a tragic day for our city. Lisbon is in mourning,” he said.

In response, the Portuguese government has declared a national day of mourning for Thursday, while President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa called for a full investigation to determine the cause of the derailment.

Operated since 1885, the Gloria line is a cornerstone of Lisbon’s heritage, handling approximately 3 million passengers annually. Its operator, Carris, affirmed that all maintenance protocols—daily inspections and regular checkups—had been observed. The public prosecutor’s office and police investigators are now engaged in a formal inquiry.
