Amazon Web Services Outage Disrupts Major Global Platforms

By Bernard Lee2 min read

KUALA LUMPUR, 21 October 2025 — Amazon has issued an update following a widespread outage that disrupted large portions of the internet on Monday morning, affecting many of the world’s most popular websites and online services.

According to Downdetector, major platforms such as Duolingo, Fortnite, Snapchat, Canva, and Roblox began experiencing downtime around 8 a.m. yesterday. The disruption was traced to technical issues at Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud-computing division that supports a substantial share of global internet infrastructure.

AWS provides cloud-based storage, computing power, and digital tools used by millions of organisations worldwide, from gaming apps like Wordle to fitness platforms such as MyFitnessPal. The division remains Amazon’s most profitable segment, generating over US$108 billion (€92.7 billion) in revenue last year.

The impact extended well beyond entertainment and consumer apps. In the United Kingdom, Lloyds Bank customers reported being unable to access online banking services. In Ireland, several software systems used in the construction, engineering, and architectural sectors were also affected. Autodesk, a leading design and engineering software provider, confirmed disruptions across its European network.

AWS said it had identified “a potential root cause” for the errors affecting its DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 region.

“We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery,” the company stated. In a later update, Amazon added: “We are seeing significant signs of recovery. Most requests should now be succeeding, and we continue to work through a backlog of queued requests.”

Several platforms have since reported improvements. Ticketmaster Ireland, one of the affected services, said its operations had returned to normal.

“We’re aware of issues facing some fans this morning due to an external internet outage,” the company said. “This has now been resolved. Please try your purchase again.”

The outage represents one of the most significant disruptions to global internet services since the CrowdStrike malfunction in 2024, which affected systems across hospitals, banks, and airports worldwide.

Given AWS’s vast reach, even short disruptions can create ripple effects across industries. The service powers thousands of essential applications, including those operated by AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and trading platform Robinhood — all of which attributed Monday’s issues to AWS.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas wrote on X: “Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it.”

Even Amazon’s own services, including Amazon.com, Prime Video, and Alexa, experienced intermittent problems during the outage, underscoring how deeply the world’s digital infrastructure depends on AWS.
