LAS VEGAS, 13 January 2026 — Amazon has unveiled a bold expansion of its artificial intelligence strategy at the CES 2026 tech show, rolling out an upgraded generative AI assistant, Alexa+, and launching a new web-based interface that puts Alexa in direct competition with web chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Amazon’s Alexa has long been a leading voice-activated assistant embedded in millions of Echo devices around the world. But as competitors such as ChatGPT-powered services and Google’s AI systems reshape how consumers interact with AI, Amazon is pressing ahead with a new vision that combines deep personalisation, real-world task execution and multimodal accessibility across devices and platforms.
Alexa+ Gets Ubiquitous — Now on the Web and Beyond
At CES, Amazon announced that its next generation AI assistant, Alexa+, is now accessible not only via smart speakers and apps but also through a dedicated web platform at Alexa.com for Early Access customers. This marks a critical shift: users can now interact with Alexa+ in a browser, much like they might engage with ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini AI.
This expansion enables Alexa+ to perform a range of daily tasks, from shopping list management and calendar organisation to meal planning, travel reservations and smart-home controls, without requiring a physical Amazon device.
In addition, Amazon has refreshed the Alexa mobile app with a more chatbot-style interface, reflecting the company’s strategy to move away from a purely voice-only experience toward a cross-platform interactive AI assistant.
Personalisation and Memory: Amazon’s AI Differentiator
Amazon executives told media at CES that the company is focused on embedding contextual memory and personalised interactions into Alexa+, enabling the AI to “remember” user preferences and life details in a way that feels more natural and tailored than earlier versions of the assistant. Examples showcased include Alexa suggesting locations based on past restaurant interests or surfacing recommendations grounded in a user’s history, an approach the company believes will distinguish Alexa+ from other generative AI models.
“We want Alexa to feel less like a tool and more like a helpful companion in everyday life,” said a senior Amazon executive. While rivals emphasise raw generative capability, Amazon emphasises continuity across devices and practical task completion as its competitive edge.
Significant Platform Extensions and Ecosystem Integration
Long associated with home automation and Echo devices, Amazon is now integrating Alexa+ into third-party hardware and environments, including cars and televisions, expanding the assistant outside the home and into new usage contexts. Earlier demonstrations at CES showed Alexa+ integrated with vehicle systems and consumer electronics, pointing to a wider ecosystem play.
However, the roll-out has not been without controversy. Recent user reports indicate that Amazon has automatically upgraded some Prime members to Alexa+, sparking debate online about user choice and the AI’s personality changes.
Competition With ChatGPT and AI Rivals
By bringing its AI assistant to browsers and mobile with capability parity to major chatbots, Amazon is explicitly targeting the growing influence of AI chat engines like ChatGPT. Analysts say the strategy reflects a broader shift in the AI landscape, from generic conversational tools to agents capable of completing real-world tasks, from booking dinner reservations to organising daily schedules.
Market watchers note this move places Alexa+ alongside ChatGPT and Google Gemini in consumers’ everyday digital workflows, where ease of use and practical assistance, rather than just conversational fluency, will differentiate winners in the next wave of personal AI tools.
