AI Exposure Deepens Korea’s Youth Employment Decline as Career Ladder Narrows

Seoul, South Korea, 18 August 2026 – South Korea’s youth employment has fallen sharply in sectors most exposed to artificial intelligence, highlighting a labour-market risk that extends beyond near-term hiring cycles. A central-bank study suggests that generative AI may be accelerating the erosion of entry-level pathways into professional work.

Between June 2022 and June 2026, the number of jobs held by people aged 15 to 29 fell by 285,000. Of that decline, 268,000 jobs, or 94%, were in sectors identified as highly exposed to AI, including information-technology services, publishing, computer programming and professional services.
