Seoul, 8 October 2026 – Investigations into cyberattacks on South Korean financial institutions are drawing attention to the use of artificial-intelligence tools by an unidentified attacker, raising questions about how quickly banks must adapt their defences. Cybersecurity analysis indicates that the intrusions combined an open-source AI-powered penetration-testing framework with several large language models between late September and early October.
The compromised systems reportedly included a bank loan-inquiry service used by financial brokers and a mobile work-support system for employees. Separate breaches under investigation have affected Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank and Shinhan Bank. At least 25,000 Shinhan customers were reported to have had personal credit information exposed, while smaller numbers were reported at the other institutions.
