Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 5 November 2026 – Malaysia will take enforcement action against citizens who enable unlawful activities by foreigners, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said in a written parliamentary reply. He also disclosed that a September 2024 survey found 92.2% of Bukit Malut’s 4,584 residents were Malaysian, distinguishing the Langkawi settlement’s population from assumptions that it consists mainly of non-citizens.
For property owners and businesses, the reply concerns responsibility for licensed activities and the use of premises, alongside wider border-security coordination. It does not identify every foreign resident as an offender or establish wrongdoing by every person in Bukit Malut. Enforcement activity, demographic status and redevelopment planning are separate measures that need to be assessed on their own evidence.
