Brussels, Belgium, 3 November 2026 – Supermarkets across at least eight European countries reported refrigeration disruptions on 2 November in a suspected cyberattack that forced retailers to discard spoiled or potentially unsafe food. Carrefour Belgium said about 15 of its 700 stores were affected, while other chains reported incidents from Sweden to Portugal, three weeks after a similar attack in France.
For Asian retailers, food distributors and investors, the incident illustrates how disruption to connected equipment can become an inventory and business-continuity problem. The confirmed losses described were physical food waste and interrupted refrigeration, not a disclosed aggregate financial charge. Responsibility remained unknown, and the level of certainty about a cyberattack differed between companies and investigating authorities.
