RM125 Is the Starting Fare. ECRL Must Deliver the Full Journey

The ECRL's RM125 starting fare gives passengers a new travel option. But its long-term success depends on the full journey, including reliability, accessibility and value.

Kuala Lumpur, 19 October 2026 – Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is moving closer to welcoming its first passengers. On 19 October, Malaysia Rail Link announced that Economy Transit fares between Gombak and Kota Bharu will start at RM125 one way, while Express services will begin at RM147.

The 523-kilometre journey is expected to take approximately four hours by Express service, with commercial operations targeted for mid-December 2026.

But RM125 is not necessarily what every passenger will pay.

The ECRL will use dynamic pricing, allowing ticket prices to vary according to travel dates, demand and seat availability. Concessions will also apply to eligible groups, including students, children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The announcement finally gives Malaysians a clearer picture of the cost of travelling on the new railway. The bigger challenge is making the entire journey worth the price.
