San Francisco, 9 October 2026 – Three former OpenAI researchers have challenged the circumstances of their dismissals, alleging that the action could discourage employees from raising safety concerns. OpenAI has rejected the retaliation claim and said an investigation found a pattern of misconduct and mishandling of research information. The disagreement places internal governance, evidence handling and whistleblowing culture under sharper scrutiny as artificial intelligence companies attract greater economic and regulatory influence.
Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak and Mikita Balesni published an open letter addressed to the company’s Safety and Security Committee, Safety Advisory Group and Mission Advisory Council. They denied improperly disclosing sensitive material and asked for independent review. Their account refers to disputes involving communication with external evaluators, research on model monitorability, an incident involving a public model platform and accidental access to executive email material.
