Japan’s Broadening Inflation Keeps Further BOJ Tightening in Focus

Tokyo, 8 October 2026 – Inflationary pressure is broadening across Japan as companies pass higher raw-material, currency and labour costs to consumers more frequently, keeping the prospect of further Bank of Japan tightening in focus. The central bank’s regional assessment also found that AI-related demand was supporting production of electronics, machinery and telecommunications infrastructure.

The Bank of Japan said many regions reported firms passing through a wide range of rising costs, including those linked to the Middle East conflict and a weak yen. Price increases are spreading towards businesses closest to consumers, with some companies adjusting prices more frequently than in the past. That pattern suggests inflation is becoming more embedded in corporate behaviour.
