US$1.8 Billion AI-Biology Alliance Targets the Data Bottleneck in Drug Discovery

A US$1.8 billion public-private initiative will combine open biological data, exascale computing and measurement tools to improve predictive models of life.

Redwood City, 7 October 2026 – A coalition involving Biohub, US government research infrastructure and technology groups linked to Alphabet and Meta has committed US$1.8 billion in funding, data, computing and measurement technology to build open biological datasets for artificial-intelligence models, targeting one of the largest constraints on AI-driven drug discovery.

The initiative combines Biohub’s Virtual Biology programme with capabilities from the US Department of Energy and industry partners including Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs and Meta. The technology companies are collectively contributing US$300 million to the programme, while the wider commitment includes public research facilities, advanced computing and experimental systems.
