Jakarta, 1 October 2026 – Indonesia posted a US$3.55 billion merchandise trade surplus in August, giving the rupiah and external accounts a visible buffer even as a much faster increase in imports complicates the headline strength. The national statistics agency reported exports of US$26.61 billion and imports of US$23.06 billion for the month, putting the balance firmly in positive territory but highlighting a changing demand mix beneath it.
Exports rose 6.72% from a year earlier, supported by mineral and manufactured shipments, while imports climbed 19.09%. The contrast is more important to investors than the surplus in isolation. A widening inflow of machinery, intermediate goods or consumer products can signal stronger activity, but without a breakdown of what is driving the increase it cannot automatically be treated as either productive investment or a deterioration in competitiveness.
