Beijing, 30 September 2026 – China’s broadcasting regulator is tightening its focus on microdramas as artificial-intelligence tools transform the scale and economics of short-form entertainment. An official said live-action productions should remain central to high-quality output even as AI lowers the cost and time required to create digital series. The policy direction matters to platforms, content studios, rights owners and investors because it could alter approval processes and the economics of rapidly produced programming.
Official figures cited at a September briefing put online microdrama releases at about 430,000 in the first eight months of 2026, roughly 13 times the total recorded for all of 2025. More than 90% of those releases used AI technology in production, according to the regulator. Those numbers describe releases and production methods; they are not a count of profitable titles, paying viewers or original intellectual-property assets. Interpreting them as revenue growth would be an error.
