Santa Fe, 25 September 2026 – A New Mexico jury has found that Meta Platforms misled Facebook users in a consumer-protection case tied to the misuse of personal information, adding another legal and governance challenge for one of the world’s largest digital advertising businesses. Jurors found 26 of 29 statements identified by the state to be misleading. The court has not yet fixed a civil penalty in this case.
The verdict followed a trial examining representations about user data and platform practices in the years after information from Facebook profiles was collected through a third-party app and used by a political consulting firm. The state argued that users were given assurances that did not match the way information was handled. Meta disputes the outcome and says it will continue defending its position.
