Kuala Lumpur, 24 September 2026 – A rise in Petronas’ upstream investment is giving Malaysia’s oil and gas supply chain a firmer demand signal, even though the national energy group’s much larger headline capital-spending number tells a different story. For investors, the distinction matters: expenditure on exploration and production tends to flow more directly into offshore services, engineering work and production support than funding used for a downstream ownership transaction.
Petronas invested RM8.7 billion in upstream operations in the first half of 2026, 19% more than a year earlier, according to an oil and gas sector assessment by RHB Investment Bank. The bank retained its overweight stance on the sector. Petronas’ total capital investments were RM41.4 billion, but RM26 billion, or 63%, sat in downstream activity. RHB said that amount was substantially influenced by an additional capital injection into the Pengerang refining and petrochemical venture as Petronas moved towards full ownership of the complex.
