Putrajaya, 20 September 2026 – Malaysia will support selected pondok institutions in upgrading facilities and expanding academic disciplines, including artificial intelligence, while developing clearer pathways into universities and technical careers. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said several traditional religious schools would pioneer new learning approaches based on their specialisations and established educational traditions.
The government’s intervention aims to raise the standing of pondok education without imposing a uniform curriculum. Anwar said specialists should determine academic content, while public support focuses on dignity, facilities and access to contemporary fields. That distinction is important because the sector includes institutions with different teaching traditions, capacities and community roles.
