Toronto, 4 September 2026 – Canada’s benchmark equity market staged its strongest one-day advance in about a month as gains in materials, technology and financial stocks drew investors back into risk assets. The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 1.5% to 36,633.12, a broad rebound that reflected stronger commodity-linked counters, renewed appetite for growth shares and easing concern that North American interest rates would need to rise as quickly as previously feared.
The rally was led by a 3.1% advance in the materials sector and a 3.7% increase in technology shares, while financials added 1.4%. Those three groups carry substantial weight in Canada’s market and their simultaneous strength gave the session greater breadth than a narrow, single-theme bounce. Discovery Silver climbed 6.5%, Lundin Gold advanced 4.2% and Barrick Mining gained 3.1%, highlighting how precious-metals exposure amplified the index’s upward move.
