London, 3 September 2026 – Uber and British autonomous-driving company Wayve have begun supervised autonomous rides in London, bringing the United Kingdom’s first commercially available autonomous ride-hailing service onto a widely used consumer platform. Customers requesting UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort may be matched with a Wayve-equipped vehicle at no additional charge, although they can switch to a conventional ride before collection.

The initial fleet consists of a small number of all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles fitted with Wayve’s AI Driver and surrounding sensors. A trained, locally licensed private-hire driver remains onboard to oversee every trip, making the launch a controlled commercial deployment rather than fully driverless operation. The service covers London but excludes airports during the opening phase.
