New Delhi, India, 24 August 2026 – Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to attend next month’s BRICS summit in New Delhi with a large delegation, a possible visit that would carry significance beyond the meeting’s formal agenda. If confirmed, it would be Xi’s first trip to India in seven years and a signal that Beijing and New Delhi are testing whether strategic competition can coexist with selective economic engagement.
India will host the summit on 12 and 13 September. Three sources cited in reports said Chinese officials were finalising hotel and security arrangements, while two said Xi could be accompanied by about 400 officials, compared with fewer than 200 on his last visit in 2019. The travel plan and any bilateral meeting remain unconfirmed, making the delegation size and attendance a matter for investors to monitor rather than a settled outcome.
