Singapore, 24 August 2026 – In a landmark policy announcement unveiled during the National Day Rally 2026, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that working parents with Singaporean children will become eligible for up to 12 days of paid statutory childcare leave annually, effectively doubling the previous six-day baseline entitlement. To balance the operational impact on commercial enterprises and small and medium-sized businesses, the Singapore government has committed to fully reimbursing employers 100% of employee salary costs for the additional six leave days, establishing a progressive human capital framework that reconciles demographic sustainability with private-sector competitiveness.
The major expansion of paid parental leave reflects the government’s strategic priority to tackle long-term demographic challenges, ease household living pressures, and support over 300,000 working parents across the island. Under the restructured policy, parents with young children below seven years of age will be able to utilize the extended leave days for medical appointments, school transitions, developmental care, and family emergencies without suffering wage deductions or sacrificing annual vacation allocations.
