Seongnam, South Korea, 17 August 2026 – HD Hyundai Electric has developed South Korea’s first 420-kilovolt sulphur-hexafluoride-free circuit breaker, positioning the company to compete for European transmission-grid investment as utilities seek lower-emission equipment.
The product is the third 420kV SF6-free breaker developed globally, according to the company. It uses a C4-based insulating gas instead of sulphur hexafluoride, a highly potent greenhouse gas traditionally used in high-voltage switchgear because of its strong insulation and arc-extinguishing performance.
