Shenzhen, 16 August 2026 – Researchers at Shenzhen University have developed an artificial-intelligence model that may help identify depression risk as far as four years in advance, using longitudinal adolescent data that combines responses to facial expressions with clinical information. The work points to a potential shift from late diagnosis towards earlier, targeted prevention.
The model drew on two European clinical studies of adolescent depression. In one cohort, participants received follow-up assessments at ages 16, 19 and 23, including magnetic-resonance imaging, blood tests and questionnaires. The research team analysed the information to identify patterns associated with later depression and used those signals to train a risk-prediction system.
