Newcastle, 13 August 2026 – Australia has committed A$2.5 billion in taxpayer support to keep the Tomago Aluminium smelter operating for at least another decade, preserving a strategic manufacturing asset while transferring a substantial share of its energy-cost risk to the public sector.
Tomago, Australia’s largest aluminium smelter, employs about 1,000 people and supports a wider network of skilled trades and regional suppliers. The facility had warned it could close when its current electricity contract expires in 2028, citing the cost of coal-fired power and insufficient reliable renewable capacity for a plant that operates continuously.
