Waters east of Taiwan, 12 August 2026 – China and Indonesia are preparing their first joint naval exercise in waters east of Taiwan, introducing a new operational dimension to a defence relationship that has expanded alongside broader economic ties.
The mid-August training will involve the Chinese navy’s Type 054A frigate Honghe and Indonesia’s KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai frigate. Announced activities include naval communications and replenishment at sea, two capabilities that test whether ships can coordinate procedures and sustain operations away from port.
