SK Hynix Weighs $3 Billion Stake Sale in Chongqing Packaging Plant to Fund AI Memory Pivot

Seoul, 12 August 2026 – Memory chip maker SK Hynix Inc. is evaluating strategic options for its semiconductor packaging and testing facility in Chongqing, southwest China, including selling a stake or bringing in external investors, as the South Korean technology giant reallocates capital toward domestic AI memory expansion.

A potential transaction could value the Chongqing facility at approximately $3 billion, representing a significant valuation uplift over SK Hynix’s initial investment of roughly $1 billion to $1.5 billion when mass production commenced in 2014. Preliminary discussions have involved local Chinese investment funds and domestic semiconductor players, with SK Hynix considering retaining a minority equity stake to preserve operational continuity.
