Sixth Quake in a Week Strikes Segamat, Johor with Magnitude 2.7

SEGAMAT: A 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck Segamat, Johor, early Saturday morning, marking the sixth tremor within a week to hit the northern Johor district, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

In a statement on Facebook, MetMalaysia reported that the earthquake occurred at 7.29am, about 2km north-west of Segamat, with a depth of 10km. The epicentre was located at 2.5 degrees north and 102.8 degrees east.

Segamat, situated around 180km from Singapore, has seen a string of seismic activity in recent days. MetMalaysia said that tremors may have been felt in the vicinity and assured that monitoring will continue.

The seismic activity began on Aug 24, when Johor experienced a 4.1-magnitude earthquake, the strongest of the series. That quake was felt not only in Segamat but also in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang.

Since then, four more aftershocks ranging between 2.5 and 3.4 magnitude were recorded — three in Segamat and one in Yong Peng, located about 28km from Kluang, all on Aug 24.
