Japan Turns to Advanced AI for Active Cyber Defence as Risks Escalate

Tokyo, 10 August 2026 – Japan is considering deploying advanced artificial-intelligence systems within its active cyber-defence framework, reflecting concern that the same powerful models used to identify software vulnerabilities could also enable more sophisticated attacks on critical infrastructure.

National Cyber Director Yoichi Iida said the use of sophisticated AI had become inevitable as high-capability models improve their ability to detect security weaknesses. The government is examining how automation can support defensive operations while retaining human involvement in final decisions.
