Kuala Lumpur, 9 August 2026 – Rising consumer incomes, expanding halal food certification, and growing appreciation for traditional Japanese gastronomy are driving a dramatic surge in Japan’s agricultural, forestry, and seafood exports to Malaysia. Speaking during a recent Japanese cuisine lecture series at Taylor’s University, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) Kuala Lumpur managing director Koichi Takano highlighted that Malaysia has now climbed to 10th place among all global export destinations for Japanese food and agricultural products, moving up from 13th place in prior rankings.
According to official trade data from Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japanese exports of agricultural, forestry, fishery, and food products to Malaysia reached 29.1 billion yen in 2025, representing a 26.3 percent year-on-year increase compared to 2024. The export composition remains heavily anchored by agricultural commodities and processed food products, which accounted for approximately 70 percent of total shipments, while premium seafood products represented 29 percent of overall trade value.
