Kuala Lumpur, 5 August 2026 – Malaysia has given social-media platforms time to align their internal mechanisms with national requirements for tackling scams and online-gambling content, placing responsibility on technology companies to improve detection, removal and cooperation before tougher enforcement is considered.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said platforms must ensure their systems can respond effectively to harmful content. The approach recognises that enforcement cannot rely solely on users reporting individual posts after losses occur. Platforms control recommendation systems, advertising tools, payment links and identity signals that can help identify coordinated abuse earlier.
